  11. Preliminary remarks on the documentation
  12. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  14. In order to use TeX or LaTeX, familiarity with the `programming
  15. language' TeX or LaTeX, respectively, is required.  Thus in general
  16. the reading of [1], [2], [5] or [8] is unavoidable.  As a brief
  17. introduction for beginners the LaTeX brief introduction of H. Partl
  18. (in German) may be used; it can be found on the disk after the
  19. installation of emTeX (details below).  It cannot be used as a
  20. substitute for [2] or [5], however.  Experience shows that trying to
  21. save time by not reading the documentation fails.  This is especially
  22. true with TeX.

  100. emTeX consists of several packages.  Each single package is provided in the
  101. form of zip files, which have to be unpacked with the program pkunzip, which
  102. is also provided.  Many packages are spread over several zip files, so that
  103. DSDD diskettes can be used.  (But fonts are available only on HD diskettes.)
  104. The package DVIDRV, for example, is found in the files dvidrv1.zip,
  105. dvidrv2.zip, and dvidrv3.zip.  On the other hand, the package PICTEX is found
  106. in the single file pictex.zip.

  394. The program pkunzip is part of a program package from PKWARE.  It is
  395. installed as follows on a disk (for example in the directory c:\pk):

  400. These lines mean the following:

  407. (contained in pkz102.exe)!

  409. The contents of a zip file (here dvidrvma.zip) can be displayed as follows:

  421. Installation
  422. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  423.  
  424. First read this file (readme.eng) in its entirety.  Then you should read the
  425. license conditions at the end of manual.doc (contained in pkz102.exe) for
  426. pkzip/pkunzip.  (And follow the conditions.)
  427.  
  428. For the installation, the program pkunzip.exe should be copied onto the disk.
  429. A directory should be used that is in the path for executables (PATH).  For
  430. OS/2 users: There is also an OS/2 version of pkzip/pkunzip, but this is not
  431. supplied with emTeX.  If you do not have this, you have to use pkunzip in
  432. the DOS compatibility environment.
  433.  
  434. All of the following examples assume that emTeX is to be installed on drive c:
  435. (You can however install emTeX on another disk, if there is enough space.)
  436. In case an older version of emTeX is already installed on the disk, this
  437. should first be removed.  First the files you have modified should be saved
  438. (usually only batch and configuration files).  Moreover, before removing emTeX
  439. from the disk, the diskettes should be checked for readability, for example
  440. with
  441.  
  442.     pkunzip -t a:*
  443.  
  444. These lines have the following meaning:
  445.  
  446.     pkunzip         Call the unpacking program
  447.     -t              Check the zip files
  448.     a:*             All the zip files on drive a:
  449.  
  450. The removal of emTeX is done with the program delete, which is supplied on the
  451. first diskette.  This is done as follows (drive c:):
  452.  
  453.     a:delete -sd c:\emtex\*.*
  454.  
  455. These lines have the following meaning:
  456.  
  457.     a:              Load the program from diskette (first diskette!)
  458.     delete          Call the file deletion program
  459.     -s              Also delete in subdirectories
  460.     -d              Remove directories
  461.     c:\emtex\*.*    Files to be removed
  462.  
  463. Since by this procedure all files in the directory \emtex and in all
  464. subdirectories of this directory will be deleted, you should not use this
  465. directory for your own files!
  466.  
  467. Now the individual packages can be installed.  The following packages are
  468. usually installed (the packages in parentheses do not have to be installed):
  469.  
  470.     TeX:            TEX, DVIDRV, (PICTEX), (TEXWARE)
  471.     LaTeX:          TEX, DVIDRV, LATEX, (BIBTEX), (TEXWARE), (MAKEINDX)
  472.     METAFONT:       MF, MFWARE, (PKEDIT), (TEX)
  473.  
  474. For example, to install the package LATEX from drive a: onto disk c:, the
  475. following should be entered:
  476.  
  477.     pkunzip -d -o a:latex? c:\
  478.  
  479. This line means the following:
  480.  
  481.     pkunzip         Call the unpacking program
  482.     -d              Use directories stored in zip file
  483.     -o              Overwrite existing files
  484.     a:latex?        Unpack the package LATEX (latex1.zip, ...)
  485.     c:\             Target path
  486.  
  487. In this way the files will automatically be copied into the right
  488. directories.  After installation you should read (or print and read) the
  489. following files:
  490.  
  491. \emtex\doc\english\texware.doc  (TEX package, English)
  492. \emtex\doc\german\texware.doc   (TEX package, German)
  493. \emtex\doc\english\dvidrv.doc   (DVIDRV package, English)
  494. \emtex\doc\german\dvidrv.doc    (DVIDRV package; do not print out; see below!)
  495.  
  496. Moreover, the license conditions in the following files should be observed:
  497.  
  498. \emtex\doc\makeindx.cpy         (MAKEINDX package)
  499. \emtex\texinput\ghyphen.min     (GTEX package)
  500. \emtex\texinput\ghyphen.max     (GTEX package)
  501.  
  502. If you have installed the package DVIDRV and have followed the directions in
  503. the part `Installation of the printer driver and screen previewer' of this
  504. file, then you should install the package DVIDRVMA.  This enables you to print
  505. out the `real' manual for the package DVIDRV (as opposed to dvidrv.doc), if
  506. you have available a suitable printer.  After printing the manual you can
  507. again delete the files taken from DVIDRVMA (see below).  If you cannot, or do
  508. not want to, print the dvidrv manual, then you have to content yourself with
  509. the indications in dvidrv.doc.
  510.  
  511. After the installation of DVIDRV you can print out the other instructions (or
  512. look at them on the screen).  Reading
  513.  
  514.     \emtex\doc\english\emtex.dvi  (TEX package)
  515.     \emtex\doc\local.dvi          (LATEX package)
  516.  
  517. is especially recommended.
  518.  
  519. In order to use TeX or METAFONT, various environment variables still have to
  520. be set; see the section `Environment Variables' further below in this file.
  521.  
  522. If you want to use LaTeX together with PiCTeX, then bigTeX has to be used.
  523. This is a bigger (but slower) version of emTeX.  At present only a preliminary
  524. version is available.
  525.  
  526. A brief introduction to LaTeX, in German, is found in the package GLATEX.
  527. Among the files delivered is the macro package german.sty of H. Partl; if you
  528. want to typeset German or other non-English texts with TeX or LaTeX, you
  529. should read the corresponding instruction \emtex\doc\germdoc.dvi.
  530.  
  531. Since there are some files which you will not need, you should write a
  532. batch file to delete the ones not needed.  In this way you can save some
  533. work in the next installation of emTeX.  For example, if you work under
  534. DOS, you will not need the OS/2 versions of TeX and METAFONT.  It is also
  535. possible to extract single files from a zip file; see manual.doc in
  536. pkz102.exe.  Example:
  537.  
  538.     pkunzip -d a:pkedit c:\ emtex\pkedit.exe
  539.  
  540. This line means the following:
  541.  
  542.     pkunzip             Call the unpacking program
  543.     -d                  Use directories stored in zip file
  544.     a:pkedit            Unpack the package PKEDIT

  551. you should read help.eng.

  555. Removing a package
  556. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  558. You can remove a package from the hard disk if the appropriate REM file is
  559. supplied - these files will appear in emTeX sets made available after 2nd
  560. May 1990.  To remove a package the program `remove', on the first disk, is
  561. needed.  If, for example, you want to remove the DVIDRVMA package from the C:
  562. drive you would enter the following commands:
  563.  
  564.     a:remove c:\emtex\remove\dvidrvma.rem c:\
  565.

  713. Installation of the printer drivers and the screen previewers

  716. 1.  Install the DVIDRV package.

  718. 2.  Copy the fonts to the disk.  For example, to install them on drive d: do

  724.     The last line has to be repeated for all suitable font diskettes.  The
  725.     fonts should if possible not be put into a directory under \emtex, in
  726.     order to simplify the installation of a new version of emTeX (that is,
  727.     without having to copy the fonts again to the disk).
